The Mur Valley - Overview

The romantic valley along the river “Mur” with its largely unspoiled nature offers the most picturesque scenery in Styria with the largest number of sunny days of the Alps. No matter if you are visiting to relax or if you prefer active holidays, in the Mur valley your holiday will be a memorable experience. The unmatched hospitality of the Styrian’s together with the culinary delights of the region will not fail to leave a lasting impression. In the winter the “Keischberg” – Styria’s second largest ski resort invites skiers and snowboarders alike to enjoy the numerous scenic runs. Everything is on offer - from wide family runs, Dinopark for children, challenging black runs and Europe’s longest half-pipe and a snowboard fun park (Airy Park). The area also offers night time sleigh riding, ice skating and romantic horse carriage excursions through the valley. In the summer enjoy hiking, bike riding along the idyllic “Murradweg” bicycle track, golfing on the 18 hole golf course.

A 10 minutes drive from Predlitz in the Mur Valley brings you into the spectacular mountain scenery of the “Turracher Höhe”. At an altitude of almost 1.800 m above sea level this small town presents in a magnificent alpine setting. The scenic interplay of the high peaks and the three idyllic mountain lakes Turracher See, Schwarzsee and Grünsee makes it a place of outstanding natural beauty perfect for hiking, cycling and leisurely walks.

The healthy, crispy alpine mountain air of the Turracher Höhe is clean and practically pollen-free, a fact which is especially appreciated by people who suffer from allergies.
In the Winter Turracher Höhe transforms into a winter wonderland perfect for any type of ski break, whether you prefer cross-country or downhill skiing, carving or snowboarding. Turracher Höhe has one of the longest skiing seasons in Austria lasting from late October to early May.

Skiing/Snowboarding:

With a stay in our Chalet in St. Georgen ob Murau you have the “Kreischberg“ ski mountain directly on your door step. The “Kreischberg” offers over 42km of snow safe runs catering for all difficulties. There are scenic runs, generous learner hills, wide carving slopes, and a selective run into the valley. Particularly versatile is also what’s on offer for children: Yabba-Dabba-Doo Land, Dinopark, children’s tubing, trampoline, magic carpet, ski crèche and many more. Snowboarders will be impressed with the longest half-pipe in Europe directly at Kreischberg and a snowboarding fun park (www.airypark.com). Kreischberg hosted the snowboarding 2003, 2006 and 2010 World Cup and will also host it in 2015. For cross-country skiers there are several tracks laid, the most beautiful route being along the river Mur. If that’s not enough four further ski resorts nearby are waiting to be explored (Frauenalpe, Grebenzen, Lachtal, Turracher Höhe). Ski buses operate from Dec to March.
Visit www.kreischberg.at for more information.

The Turracher Höhe enjoys an even longer 6-month skiing season from November right through to the end of April. Being situated 1763 m above sea level this ski resort is not only stunningly beautiful in its setting but also snow-safe for decades to come. Enjoy direct access to the slope (slope access) directly from our cabins and explore 38 km of slopes with breathtaking views of the Nock mountains. One of the key attractions is Turrach’s Ski Butler cruising the area to be at the skiers’ service in a Mercedes-fashion skidoo, serving a glass of sparkling wine at the lifts, handing out small treats to the kids and providing assistance if required. Hiking:

The “Mur“ valley holiday region offers numerous scenic hiking tracks between 800m and 2700m for all levels of difficulty. Dramatic changes in the landscape between the eleven different hiking regions of the area make the hiking in Styria particularly exciting. The “Gstoder” mountain in St. Ruprecht boasts the most spectacular views of the valley; the hike to the “Zwiefeln” glacier lakes is versatile and offers the most beautiful mountain panorama. The seven-peak mountain tour from the “Frauenalpe” to the “Kreischberg” is a challenge for even the more seasoned hikers. Beautiful family hikes are also accessible from the 'Turracher Höhe', such as the magical 3-Lake Walk.
